Apple is committed to providing product-specific reports on their web site in order for customers to make informed decisions about the products’ energy usage. The Company now measures energy usage from the raw material extracting all the way to the recycling of the product, including customer usage and office space required to market the product. Authoritative organizations argue that Apple still does not provide enough transparency in their reporting of other areas of environmental impact, but in terms of energy usage, the Company has complied with both customer and NGO requests to provide more information.
For example, the 20-inch iMac consumes about the same amount of electricity as a single household light bulb, approximately 67 watts, when turned on. Additionally, manufacturing and using a MacBook results in 460 kg of CO2e emissions over four years of use. According to the EPA , that’s about the same amount the average car emits in a month.
Moving forward, Apple is committed designing and building products, which are efficient in both size and energy consumption.
