Energy Use Summary [login to edit summary]

Apple is committed to providing product-specific reports on their web site in order for customers to make informed decisions about the products’ energy usage. The Company now measures energy usage from the raw material extracting all the way to the recycling of the product, including customer usage and office space required to market the product. Authoritative organizations argue that Apple still does not provide enough transparency in their reporting of other areas of environmental impact, but in terms of energy usage, the Company has complied with both customer and NGO requests to provide more information.

For example, the 20-inch iMac consumes about the same amount of electricity as a single household light bulb, approximately 67 watts, when turned on. Additionally, manufacturing and using a MacBook results in 460 kg of CO2e emissions over four years of use. According to the EPA , that’s about the same amount the average car emits in a month.

Moving forward, Apple is committed designing and building products, which are efficient in both size and energy consumption.

  • Improvements in CPU power management and the migration to LCD (liquid crystal display) technology enabled a power savings of 92% in sleep-mode and a 73% decrease in off-mode power consumption between the first generation and the current iMac.
  • The Mac mini consumes as little as 25W when on, less than half the power consumed by a typical(1) light bulb, making it one of the most power efficient desktop computers in the world.
  • Since 1998, Apple has cut the off-mode power consumption of power adapters used with our portable computers by 82% in a no-load situation:

Apple’s goal is to meet or exceed the standards set by several programs:

  • The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR ® program, of which Apple was a founding member
  • The California Energy Commission appliance efficiency regulations
  • The US Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP)
  • The European Union Code of Conduct on Efficiency for External Power Supplies
