Now companies are forced to offers foods for the wellness of the people because there is a rise in poor health. These once ignored impacts of a developing world have come to light and Campbell’s plans to remove their heavy MSG contents in soups, broths. These are two very important components because they consume over 70% of their volume. With the verity of broth and soups the company was forced to adapt to the needs of the people. I read an interesting report that stated, “With these new additions, the number of Campbell’s soups and broths without added MSG is more than 130 products.”
Another interesting fact that I obtained from the company website is that by, Fall 2009, Campbell will offer more than 90 lower sodium soups in the United States. Campbell Soup is moving beyond their original addressment of the high MSG ingredients in their products. Campbell has also introduced a variety of lower sodium products over the last three years, including: - Reducing the sodium in original V8 100 % vegetable juice to 480 mg per serving - Introducing Prego Heart Smart Italian sauces - Reducing the sodium in Campbell’s SpaghettiOs original and meatball pastas by 25 percent - Reducing the sodium in eight varieties of Pepperidge Farm breads by 25 percent
There has been an increase in air pollution and greenhouse gases. Campbell’s is working with farmers to reduce the Integrated Pest Management concept within their agricultural practices. The exposure of chemicals and pesticides used to promote a fresher, higher quality of foods has caused a hazard to the consumers health as well as the local sourcing neighborhoods.
Campbell’s states, “While using traditional breeding methods, we have developed an array of disease-resistant seeds. In Mexico we also provide access to data generated by a proprietary Geographic Information System database that helps our growers mitigate crop losses by forecasting the risk of viral infections. We want to help our growers maintain production levels while reducing the need for synthetic pesticides.”
Campbell’s is also in the process of developing a corporate GHG inventory management plan due to EPA regulations. Another thing that I found interesting about Campbell’s interest in the climate change within the environment and how that impacts emission. Their initiatives to use low energy technology and alternative fuels are just a small token to their promotion of sustainable manufacturing.
Campbell now is conservative with their energy and material usage. Campbell states, their philosophy is to “reduce, reuse and recycle.” The consumption is close to 70% of the 157,000 metric tons of solid waste. The largest part of their waste consumption is animal feed. The management of there framers is very important in keeping up to date with government regulations.
The water used by Campbell is made up of a treatment process that uses the microorganism and bacteria that reside in the soil to naturally and effectively process water waste streams aerobically. The company responsibility reports states, “That Pepperidge Farm- a brand of Campbell’s partnered with Connecticut Clean Energy and Fuel Cell Energy, Inc to install natural gas powered fuel with in the banking plant.”
The expenditures of maintaining the environmental friendly procedures are costly but becuase of public poicy its a must.
From Campbell’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) report, “They encompasses the economic, environmental and social aspects of a business with regard to the interactions with their stake holders. Their presence in the community through an organized framework will help understand the breakdown in the way the company operated with regard to their view on their CSR : Economic – Our Customer Environment – Our Planet Social- Our Workplace and Our Communities
Furthermore, their view of CSR ’s is consistent with the United Nations/Brundtland Commission definition of sustainability: “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”” According to an article entitled, Campbell Adds New Soup Line in Maxton, North Carolina; Expansion Will Create 50 New Jobs I would say that, the local procurement is a must in operating a successful manufacturing business. In order to have the ingredients for their products it is important to have the capabilities to process these essential items. The article states, “That a multi-million dollar investment in Maxton will enable Campbell to produce ready-to-serve soups and broths packaged in cartons. In addition to the new equipment, the investment will increase the size of the facility by 4,000 square feet. The operations will begin in September 2008 and will continue throughout the year. Campbell employs approximately 800 people at Maxton. Campbell expects to create 50 new full-time jobs in Maxton over a three-year period as a result of the expansion. The expansion plan includes a $150,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund, which provides financial assistance to attract business projects that stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state.” Also the article presents the ideal that, “Maxton is an ideal location for adding this new soup line due to our highly skilled and dedicated work force and our ability to produce products efficiently,” said Mark T. Cacciatore, Campbell’s Senior Director-Operations Maxton, North Carolina facility. “With this added capacity, we will be able to meet the ongoing consumer demand for these high-quality ready-to-serve soups and broths. The cooperation of the state and county government officials also contributed to our decision to expand in Maxton.” This is just a further expansion of a procurement measure by building to maximize production capacity. Within the society, Campbell’s has faced problems with labor. According to the Los Angeles Times reprint, “The Ohio cucumber growers supplying Campbell were sued in 1993 by migrant workers who claimed the farmers concealed child laborers by assigning their earnings to adults. The suit was settled for $200,000.” This is not good publicity but it was resolved and it was hard to find other allegations of misconduct with regard to labor laws. Campbell’s is hands on with social related issues such as HIV /AIDS research. The company according to the Women Alive Newsletter, has uses a product called Carrageenan that is a preventative against viral infections like HIV . Carrageenan is a food thickener used in soups, ice cream and baby food and has been incorporated in these products since the ‘60s. Another additional issue that falls under the category of society is human rights. The World Net Daily states, “Campbell’s Soup Company purchased a pair of two-page advertisement spreads in one of the nation’s leading pro-homosexual magazines, including an ad highlighting a lesbian couple and their son, reports the American Family Association.” According to the responsibility report by Campbell’s, their processes for employee wage training and benefit are designed to incorporate employees in the organizational resource planning. There are performance evaluations which help to identify the employees accomplishments as well as their areas that need improvement. They are looking for the “what” and “how” measurements. Something that stands out within this company is there level of interaction and support per individual. There are courses that are available to help build skills and improved manager quality and effectiveness. Campbell’s participates and surround their company culture with several networks: Campbell’s is a part of several networks: Women of Campbell, Campbell African American Network, Hispanic Network de Campbell, Asian Network of Campbell, Our Pride Employee Network and Campbell gay and lesbian, bisexual and transgender employee network and lastly, The Bridge network. There seems to be a commitment to diversity at Campbell’s. They received several acknowledgments for best places to work and best employees. This is all relative to equity. A diverse company is a plus in today’s times. The collective bargaining that Campbell’s is associated with pertains to the medical costs that are containment and managed care. The Review of Business article talks about the collective bargaining that Campbell Soup Company will take with regard to their health benefits costs. The article states, “By assuming direct responsibility for controlling these costs, the company sought out and implemented the most promising measures. The early results are encouraging. Employee acceptance of the managed care approach is steadily increasing while the rate of growth in outlays for health benefits is slowing down. However, the programs require close monitoring, continuous evaluation and regular revision. Given the significant amount of a company’s resources involved, this extra effort is clearly well-justified.” I think this was a great strategy to implement. The occupational health and safety associated with Campbell’s is there to make sure there is a work life balance and also a health conscience atmosphere. Their dedication to making sure that the employees are also in tune to the mission of having foods that are nourishing for the body is a great culture to abide by. The activeness in the community and also the military in hard times are great marketing tips. They offer the perception that Campbell’s is very hand on and derived by community and cultural awareness. There was a soup donation to the Trenton, NJ hosted by the Family Resource Center to show their support for the military troops. What a kind gesture. I often wonder the balance in saving face and good deeds.
Campbell also announced that Campbell’s Healthy Request soups, already recognized for their lower sodium benefit, will undergo further sodium reduction from 480 mg sodium to 410 mg sodium per serving. This is a direct answer to the product responsibility of a company. Some information that I pulled from the website are related to the 25 Healthy Request soups, including condensed, Select Harvest Healthy Request and Chunky Healthy Request soups in cans and microwavable bowls, will display the American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Check mark. To display the symbol, products must be low in fat, trans fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, controlled for sodium and contain a good source of a positive nutrient, such as vitamin A. I found this interesting because Campbell’s marketing efforts will focus on heart-healthy eating and new labels will be positioned, a heart on the front of the package beginning in August. This is great marketing! Promoting heart-healthy eating is consistent with Campbell’s support of the AHA Go Red For Women movement. Also noted by the CSR , Campbell has donated more than $1.8 million to support the cause and showcase the importance of healthy eating to help prevent heart disease. All the product information is located on the website in a visible manner. This is obtainable for everyone with internet accessibility as well as on labels of their products. Customer satisfaction is important to any company or industry with relation to its growth and feedback to chain management. To improve their flagship Campbell’s hired a company called QlikView to improve their business management and supply chain management. According to QlikView’s website they are enabling employees to analyze corporate data in innovative ways to advance inventory control and ensure the right product mix is available to customers at the right time. The company could be the next generation business intelligence solution. The company profile states that their in-memory analysis and reporting solutions for enterprise and individual customers at an affordable price. Keeping up with industry information technology can help to further your business and serve as a competitive advantage. Ecomall and its affiliate with green shopping has announced that Campbell has a verity of organic certified products. On the site there is a posting from Campbell Soup Company stating, it is launching its first certified organic product, Campbell’s Organic Tomato Juice. This is coming to stores this month. Interesting enough there was a seeding selection by Campbell’s Seeds Company in Davis, CA. There are certain regiments that must take place for a product to be deemed of organic quality. It is preserved that most organic products are high in price, hence the process of going with a less healthy product. Campbell’s has a suggested retail of the multi-serve plastic bottle for $2.69. The Green America Today organization provided limited information regarding the fair trade at Campbell’s. What I was able to find was related to the Godiva Chocolatier, which is a part of Campbell and it does not sell fair trade chocolate. In understanding the product responsibility of a company it is important to research animal testing. There was an announcement on the website of the company that announced the condensation of Vegetarian Vegetable Soup. The certification of kosher foods is an important step in reaching customers that do not agree with animal testing. The marketing inactivates that are present at Campbell’s are in accordance with a leading company wanted to be present in an industry that is not limited to one particular customer nor regulation by the government.
Campbell Soup Company is not involved in any political contributions. It does not participate in donations to certain political campaigns or parties. This is a marketing tactic that was put in place to establish boundaries for plausible corruption and neglect government scandals. The direct economic impact is not stated. This information is private and the corporate goverence of the company is made up of a committee that reviews concerns. I retrieved information off the company website that breaks down the structure of the committee. The information is comprised of the following, “The Compensation and Organization Committee is appointed by the Board of Directors and consists of five or more independent directors. All members of the Committee meet the requirements as to independence established by the New York Stock Exchange, and qualify as “non-employee directors” The Committee’s purposes are to oversee compensation and organization matters affecting the Company, including compensation and benefits policies, performance and compensation of the Company’s senior executives, management development and succession planning, and major organization changes; to discharge the Board’s responsibilities relating to compensation of the Company’s executives; and to prepare the report on executive compensation that is included in the Company’s annual proxy statement in accordance with applicable rules and regulations of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.”
