Alliance Boots was formed on July 31 2006 through the merger between Alliance UniChem and Boots Group. Alliance Boots were one of the first retailers to join the Round table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Alliance Boots is working with other RSPO members to develop a system to ensure that palm oil is grown more sustainably and that conditions in producing countries are improved.

To reduce waste going to landfill, Alliance Boots drafted a policy in which surplus, redundant, or otherwise un-sellable stock is made available for staff to purchase, or sent out as part of a charitable donation program.

During 2006-2007, Boots donated a total of £1.7m to charity. The Company has also been involved in cancer research and fundraising, and is partners with the Breast Cancer Care and Cancer Research UK (SunSmart Policy).
